Understanding Mental Levels/Chitta Bhumi's

Updated: Feb 2, 2023

Mental Levels of a Human's as per Yoga Sutras:

If one dwells deeper into the yoga sutra's of patanjali, we understand that Vyasa in his commentary has classified humanity into 5 mental levels/Chitta Bhumis.

1. Kshipta Chitta/ Distracted/Chaotic Mind

Here Rajas Guna is dominant, attached to Sukha's/happiness and Dukha's/miseries, agitated state of mind, not fit for Samadhi. It is the lowest mental level and fluctuates
between extremes such as likes and dislikes, pain and pleasure. Also called as demented condition.
It’s extremely hard for this group to fathom the depth of yoga and sit still or even concentrate.
We can loosely call it as Monkey mind.

2. Moodha Chitta/Dull/Lethargic Mind

Here, Tamas Guna is Dominant, attached to eat and sleep, lazy, not fit for samadhi.
Here sense's dictate and go through the cycle of life and birth with ignorance, rolling the punches and going with the tide. This mind lacks vitality due to sluggish nature
of mind. Very easy to fall into the trap of sadness and depression.
We can loosely call it as Donkey mind.

3. Vikshipta Chitta/Partially Focused Mind

Distracted, restless one's, sometimes steady, partially focused, yearns self-realization but strays due to senses. Vacillates between clarity and confusion. Needs discipline.
We can loosely call it as Butterfly mind.

4. Ekagrata Chitta/One Pointed Mind

Sattva Guna is dominant, One-pointedness is seen, focused, concentrated,
fit for Samadhi. Clarity is dawned due to continuous practice. Mental awareness is strong.

5. Nirodha Chitta/Fully Absorbed Mind

Guna's come into equilibrium, Fully Arrested/Absorbed state of mind, closed to any thoughts or stimulation, Samadhi state is already achieved. Longer periods in Niruddha Chitta Bhumi results
in Kaivalya state/Liberation.
